KAWS-Companion-Passing-Through-1024x678The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) is teaming up with Amtrak to bring KAWS’ 16-foot-tall sculpture Companion Passing Through to our very own 30th Street Station (the above picture is from its Fort Worth,Texas stop). The fiberglass and metal sculpture is making its Philly debut next Thursday 4/11, and will remain on display until May 14. Having first appeared in Hong Kong in 2010, KAWS’ Companion character is one of the most recognizable figures in street art culture – so much that was featured as a balloon in the 2012 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. UBIQ Chooses 2 Live

UBIQ was a part of the iChoose2live and TakeControlPhilly HIV Awareness documentary shoot that occured on May 20th 2012. Philadelphia’s youth stopped into our store all day participating in group discussions held by Philly talent such as DJ Damage of Hot 107.9, GoGo Morrow, Melissa Hopely and Lafayette Kanard. The discussions consisted of groups of people sharing their stories about sex, relationships and experiences with and without HIV. These people ranged from the ages of 14 to 25 and are of different ethnic and religious backgrounds. CEO of iChoose2live, Shenille Latrice, organized this event and was very pleased about the days turnout. Latrice states, “The entire day ran smoothly. This was exactly how I envisioned it going.”

A special thanks goes out to everyone who participated including the teens, camera crew and UBIQ staff! UBIQ was honored to be a part of this project and we need all of our customers and fans to help us spread awareness for this cause.

For more information about these organizations and to view the documentary video visit iChoose2live.com and takecontrolphilly.org.

Chili in Philly…

chili

Fans of UBIQ who frequent the store or call in for phone orders should be pretty familiar with our manager Woody. If you’re super familiar with Woody you know that the dude can EAT. Like, a LOT. Chili in particular is one of Woody’s favorite things. He’s always traveling to go to BBQ and Chili contests. He’s the only person I’ve ever met who travels for the sole purpose of eating food.

So Woody tipped me off to this event that’s going down this weekend in South Philly – The Philly Chili Bowl, which is being hosted by one of his friends. I’m sure he’ll be there, so go check it out, support some locals and eat a ton of chili!

kobayashi

Philadelphia’s classic eating contest, the Wing Bowl, went down early this morning at the Wells Fargo Center and the infamous Kobayashi handled business. He downed 337 wings (!!!) over two 14 minutes rounds and a 2 minute sprint round. Second place was claimed by last year’s winner Jonathan Squibb who managed to eat 257 wings. Kobayashi is no joke.
